Microsoft 365

Microsoft 365 beyond the default settings

Microsoft 365 offers more than most small businesses use. Deployments are commonly left at default settings, with security gaps and paid-for features going unused.

The reality

What we find in most M365 tenants

Microsoft 365 is easy to set up badly. The out-of-box defaults leave a surprising number of security gaps, and most self-configured tenants have at least some of these issues.

None of them are hard to fix. The difficult part is knowing what to check.

Email going to spam because SPF/DKIM/DMARC aren't set up
Admin accounts without MFA — the highest-risk configuration possible
Everyone is a Global Admin because nobody set up proper roles
OneDrive used inconsistently, SharePoint barely touched
Legacy authentication still enabled, allowing MFA bypass
No retention policies — data could be deleted permanently

Azure Active Directory / Entra ID configured with proper group structures, conditional access policies, and MFA enforcement.

Not sure which licence you need?

Microsoft's licensing can be confusing. Here's a rough guide for small businesses:

Business Basic
~£5/user/month

Email, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive. Web versions of Office apps only. Good for businesses that mainly need email and collaboration.

Most common
Business Standard
~£10/user/month

Everything in Basic plus desktop Office apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). The right choice for most small businesses.

Business Premium
~£19/user/month

Standard plus advanced security — Intune, Defender for Business, Azure AD Premium. Recommended if you handle sensitive data or need Cyber Essentials Plus.

Prices are indicative. We'll go through your requirements on a call and recommend the right licence.
